Visiting ImÄm ZamÄn (mGehr) by the scholar Baḥr al Ulum

One day Baḥr al Ulum accompanied the people who were beating their chests, along with some of his [religious] students. All of a sudden, the scholar Baḥr al Ulum was a great source of imitation in religious matters. left his turban and Arabian cloak on the ground and went into the mourning crowd, with the bare head and feet. He started beating on his head and chest, like other people who were beating on their chests. His students tried a lot to prevent him from that great suffering, but he didn’t let them!

Anyhow when it was night, one of those students asked the reason. And he replied:

As I reached the group who were beating their chests, I saw His Excellency “Baqiyah Allah†ImÄm ZamÄn (mGehr). He was beating on his chest and head, and crying among the people, with his bare feet and head. So, I couldn’t bear it and I started beating on my chest, along with him.

I used to discuss with the scholar, Baḥr al Ulum the lesson; taught by Professor Waheed Behbahani. And I was interpreting the discussion for him. I went to Iran afterward, and I learned about the scientific reputation of Sayyid Baḥr al Ulum. I was astounded!

When I [returned to Najaf and] visited him, I wondered, ‘O, sir! When we were together, you didn’t have such a rank. What happened?!’ The Sayyid reacted, ‘Keep this secret till I am alive: How shouldn’t I have progressed, while my sir Hijjah ibn al- Haṣan (mGehr) embraced, one night in Kūfah mosque.
