Obstacles to the Reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi

In the Name of God, the Guardian

According to Islamic sources and the analyses of Shiʿa scholars, the obstacles to the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his reappearance) can generally be divided into two categories: internal obstacles, which are related to the Shiʿa community and its members, and external obstacles, which are related to conditions in the wider world.

The main internal and external obstacles include the following:

1. Insufficient Readiness within the Shiʿa Community

  • Lack of deep faith, knowledge, and obedience.
  • Weakness in providing practical support for Imam al-Mahdi.
  • Division and lack of unity among Muslims.

2. The Spread of Injustice and Moral Corruption

  • Injustice, widespread oppression, and discrimination.
  • The spread of sins, neglect of religious values, and excessive attachment to worldly life.
  • A decline in people’s pursuit of justice.

3. The Lack of Sufficiently Prepared and Capable Supporters

  • For his uprising, Imam al-Mahdi needs faithful, knowledgeable, committed, and self-sacrificing supporters. According to narrations, these include the well-known group of 313 devoted companions.
  • When people are not adequately prepared, the necessary conditions for identifying, nurturing, and gathering such supporters are not fully established.

4. Divine Trials and the Divine Order

  • According to the divine order and established principles, the fulfillment of the promised reappearance involves particular processes of spiritual and social development, as well as divine trials.
  • The period of occultation provides an opportunity for believers to purify their beliefs and serves as a test of their faith and steadfastness.

5. The Necessary World Conditions Have Not Yet Been Established

  • The required political, social, and cultural conditions have not yet been fully established.
  • The world has not yet reached a condition in which justice is widely recognized and accepted as the basis of social order.
